What Hadley heard was a very wet-sounding succession of sneezes, followed by a pitiful meow. She turned around to see a brown-and-black tabby with a white face tottering over to her. Its eyes were watery as they locked onto hers.

“And what do we have here?” She leaned over to pick up the cat once it reached her.

“That’s a kitten from the summer litter. He must have a little cold.” Luke smoothed a hand over the cat’s thick winter fur.

The animal was less than a year for sure. It had the lanky body of a young cat, but was also already quite substantial. Its emerald-green eyes pierced into hers. And even though the Fenton’s cats had always been a hearty bunch, she sensed that this one was asking for help.

“Luke, this little guy shouldn’t be out here in the cold while he’s fighting an infection.”

A shrug was his answer until he added. “Had, he’s a barn cat. What do you want me to do, bring him inside with me?”

She scratched under the cat’s chin and he purred. “That’s exactly what I think you should do. Marmalade had an upper respiratory infection a few months ago, which is what it sounds like this guy has, and Danielle told me to keep an eye out for Ansel because it can be very contagious. You don’t want him infecting the rest of the cats.” She shot Luke a pointed stare.

Danielle Murphy, the local vet, visited the Fenton Farm regularly. She checked up on the small animals as well as the livestock. Hadley was sure the doctor would say the cat could recover fine outside, but Hadley couldn’t get past the feeling he was asking for help.

The cat bumped its head up into Hadley’s chin, purring deeper and blinking sleepy green eyes at her. Her heart melted. As if he’d only just noticed Luke, the cat glanced over and meowed in what seemed like a hello. He waggled his body and jumped from Hadley’s lap into Luke’s.

Luke chuckled. “Well, hey there, little sick guy.” He ruffled the fur on the cat’s head. The cat put its front paws on Luke’s chest and butted its head into his chin like it had done with Hadley. Luke placed a hand on the cat’s back to steady him.

“See?” Hadley said. “He’s asking for your help, Luke. What’s his name?”

“Uh …” Luke shook his head. “Cat? We never name any of the barn cats. They’re happier being wild. Remember when we used to try to play with them when we were younger? We’d pick them up for a second, and they’d want to get down right away. They’re independent.” He looked down at the cat as if waiting for it to jump away and illustrate his point. Instead of getting down, the cat lay down, snuggling his face into Luke’s neck.

Hadley laughed. “Right. Super independent. I think this one’s a little different. You might have to name him. He could be Barney since he’s a barn cat.”
